What to Expect from the American, Canadian, UK, and Australian Veterinary Boards
This overview explains the major steps required for veterinary licensure in the 🇺🇸 USA, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇬🇧 UK, and 🇦🇺 Australia — before diving into more detailed guides.
🇺🇸 United States — BCSE → NAVLE → CPE → State Exams
🩺 Step 1: Registration. You can find a detailed guide on how to register with the ECFVG here.
🧠 Step 2: Language requirement. You can find a detailed guide on required scores here.
📘 Step 3: BCSE (Basic Clinical Sciences Exam)** • 225 multiple‑choice questions, 220 minutes • Tests foundational veterinary knowledge
🩺 Step 4: CPE (Clinical Proficiency Examination) ** Hands‑on exam across 7 stations: • Surgery • Anesthesia • Small animal Medicine • Radiology • Necropsy • Food animals • Equine
🧠 Step 5: NAVLE** • 360 MCQs, 6.5 hours • Strong clinical reasoning and diagnostic focus (The ECFVG does not actually consider this as part of the ECFVG process as NAVLE is the licensing exam for all vets including graduates from accredited schools, but practically speaking it is a required step, you can take the NAVLE before the CPE if you want to.)
⚖️ Step 6: State Jurisprudence Exams** • Legal and regulatory exams required by each state
🇨🇦 Canada — BCSE → NAVLE → PSA → CPE → Provincial Licensing
🩺 Step 1: Registration. You can find a detailed guide on how to register with the NEB here.
🧠 Step 2: BCSE (same as ECFVG)
📘 Step 3: NAVLE (also can be taken before or after CPE)
🩺 Step 4: PSA (Pre‑Surgical Assessment) — Canadian‑specific requirement, this is the only difference exams wise between the ECFVG and the NEB
🧠 Step 5: Provincial Requirements — Jurisprudence exams.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom — RCVS Registration / Statutory Exam
🩺 Step 1: Declare intention to set
🧠 Step 2: Statutory Examination (consist of two parts):
- Written Exam: Core knowledge + public health
- OSCE: Practical clinical skills assessment
🇦🇺 Australia — NVE Pathway
🩺 Step 1: Eligibility assessment — Degree verification
🧠 Step 2: Preliminary Exam — Two‑day MCQ exam
📘 Step 3: Clinical Examination — Multi‑station practical assessment
🩺 Step 4: State Registration — Final licensing step
